So Now We’re Going to Live In China’s Basement?

February 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Apparently, the Culture of Dependence isn’t just something Obama wants Americans to take part in with regard to their own government.  Now the Secretary of State is begging China to buy up more and more of our country, so we can be dependent on and at the mercy of a rising foreign power.  Brilliant!

In Beijing, [Secretary of State Hillary Clinton] called on authorities in Beijing to continue buying US Treasuries, saying it would help jumpstart the flagging U.S. economy and stimulate imports of Chinese goods.

“By continuing to support American Treasury instruments the Chinese are recognising our interconnection. We are truly going to rise or fall together,” Clinton said at the US embassy here.

It is a statement of stunning naivete to assume China doesn’t have an interest in seeing our economy tank.  They also have an interest in seeing us succeed, to be sure.  But which one of those conflicting interests will gain the most traction?  I don’t know that we can say for certain at this point.

I don’t have any problem with seeking foreign investment.  But we must be careful to not let that investment turn into a controlling interest.  By not just allowing, but in fact insisting that China continues to buy and therefore control an ever-larger portion of our economy, we are doing two things that are very, very dangerous.

First, we are giving a potential rival, one who has made at least one major cyber attack on our Pentagon (and that’s the one we know about!) another weapon with which to lay us low.  It’s bad enough to have Obama-Reid-Pelosi in charge of our economy, who at least have some stake in our economy.

Second, though, and most importantly, we’re showing our weakness.  We’re trotting around the globe announcing to everyone that we want to move back into our parents’ basement.  We’re announcing the fragility of our nation, and shamelessly hawking the the tools our enemies can use against us after they buy them from us at bargain basement prices.

China doesn’t care about their own people.  They certainly don’t care about ours.

If we expect a regional power hungry to be a world power to like us because they feel sorry for us, we’ll be just as disappointed as the zit-faced nerd who thinks the hot chick will make out with him if only she pities him enough.

The really sad thing is that Hillary was supposed to be the hawk of this administration.
