In search of the Unified Theory of Conservatism

I’ll Stick With The Freedom, Thanks!

This little cartoon is fantastic – all of our kids need to see it once.  Our politicians need to watch it about once a week, I think.  It was as true in 1948 as it was in 1910 and as it is in 2010.

What I really love about this video is that it shows how the core American principle of individual liberty ultimately helps everyone.  (Well, except for the guys selling “Ism.”)  Workers benefit (even if union bosses don’t), investors benefit, small business owners (like the farmer) benefit, consumers benefit, and ultimately even people who work in the public sector benefit.

A problem I think a lot of conservatives make is to impugn the motives of our Progressive fellow citizens.  It’s wrong for the most part, and counter productive besides.  Their ideas are wrong and destructive to our liberty and prosperity, but that isn’t their goal – they just fell for the sales pitch of a free-lunch utopia where Someone Else pays for everything.  Problem is that Utopia, it turns out, comes with a lot of strings attached and isn’t cheap.  And eventually we run out of all those Someone Elses.

So let’s not waste time turning the false utopia salesmen into martyrs.  Instead, let’s get out there and sell the real thing – Freedom wrapped up in a package we call the Constitution.  It doesn’t get any more positive or powerful than that.
