Yesterday I was at a big Nevada Day party in Carson City. Prominent among the attendees were Obama supporters sporting buttons, stickers, shirts, and even facepaint.
Every time I saw one of them walked buy with a drink in their hand, I wanted to take it away and drink half. When they complained, I would helpful explain that my drink was empty, and theirs was full. My actions were only fair. They could always get more by going back over to the bar and standing in line. Besides – they didn’t really need all that beer anyway.
I would just be helping them be neighborly. Hell – them giving me their beer would be patriotic, according to their VP nominee.
No one who protested – and I think that would be all of them – actually understand what it is they’re voting for. Frustrating.
Seriously, how can it be good to “spread the wealth?” Should YOUR effort, drive, and determination to better yourself (and your family) be “taken” by the government arbitrarily?–because you did well for yourself? When did it become wrong for people to make money? What do these “spread the wealth” people want? – Everyone to be the same? Do you know what this sounds like??? Might as well be the USSA (United Socialist States of America). Making everyone economically equal at the hands of the government is wrong. Address the causes of inequality–don’t punish those who overcame adversity and used the free market to earn a living. Talk about “un-American…” I don’t foresee any real change in four years of Obama rule, but I fear he will push to “punish” those with means…and make a real effort to do so. College grads in the middle to upper-middle class – watch out on your 2010 tax return…YOU will bear this burden. Sure, there are problems, but the Obama way is off base.
People do not “succeed” in this country because of their “effort, drive and determination.” Everybody in this country works hard: from the activist, to the illegal immigrant, to the public interest lawyer, to the academic, to the teacher.
People “succeed” in this country because of inherited wealth, greed, and an institutionalized system that is setup to benefit rich white men.
AMadrone, seriously? Do you even know who responds to these blogs? I was raised in a trailer in the slums outside an Air Force Base. My parents floated checks for FOOD…to EAT! Yes, I barely had enough to eat. I worked my ass off in school and now command a ship in the Coast Guard. Effort and drive got me where I am…and nothing else. I had no breaks “thanks to the white man” and was not afforded Government help through welfare . You talk and make accusations, but you don’t know your audience. I am not an exception to the rule either. So, by your standards, because I am white, and I have succeeded, I MUST turn over my money to folks who have not worked hard? I am obligated to “spread my wealth?” Are you donating YOUR salary to all who live below your standard. Do you have a TV? Isn’t that excessive? So many others do not even have TVs… Do you spend money on things you don’t need…odds are you do…like internet and a computer. If so, you have no leg to stand on. You can’t “talk” the left-wing word…you MUST live it if you’re going to blindly accuse me of being a man who “inherited his worth through greed due to race.” You seem to think all those who are not YOU or do not share your view are the enemy…greed infested white men who will do whatever it takes to destroy those below them. Come on! Live less than paycheck-to-paycheck for a while…in a mobile home without heat (I did – did you?) and then tell me that drive and effort don’t mean anything. Enjoy the higher taxes and NO appreciable benefit. Enjoy the eroded Bill of Rights as you crave more Government, yet lament the Government telling you what to do…since you’ve charged them to run your life through MORE government. Enjoy your hypocrisy – and your unyielding desire to excuse Obama under the umbrella of Bush bashing (should he not become the SAVIOR you make him out to be) when he takes more and more from those of us on the cusp of “finally doing better than our parents.” Do you realize you are advocating an America that departs from freedom and Democracy…YOU can say your uneducated comments because of the very system you criticize. So…know your audience before unleashing an unparalleled ignorance on the rest of us…and try 13 years in a mobile home at the end of an Air Force flight line…and hope you have enough to eat…THEN give me a call.
Eric, step away from the quotation marks….
Americans will only have freedom and democracy when they have true equality.
If you were successful in your situation it’s because you were born smart enough to do well, or got lucky. Either way, you’re no more entitled to what you have than the guy living under a bridge.
AMadrone – your comments are truly frightening. Eric “got lucky”? Your comments are so truly idiotic, there is no intelligent way to respond – but I’ll try. As long as good American’s, like Eric and Orrin are alive, we won’t stand for the kind of society you clearly want – one where we are all “equal”. A quick look at history will tell you that model has never worked, and never will. I recommend you read Orwell’s Animal Farm. Some will always want more, and strive for more. Competition is a fundamental requirement for anything to succeed in this world. Every species of animal on the planet has survived because the strongest among them ensure their survival. If they all adopted the “we are all equal” model you seem fond of, they would certainly be extinct. I think that what people really mean when they say they want “equality” is an excuse to not work hard, benefit from the hard work of others, and not have to compete because they are weak, and know they cannot compete. Easier to bring everyone down to their level, than try to rise up. People succeed in this country because we have opportunities. People willing to work can achieve anything. Your system will remove opportunities and incentive – precisely the opposite of your intent.
Derek, the individualist worldview you espouse is hardly “the way it is.” It’s just the historical, euro/protestant-centric worldview. Communitarian outlooks are equally valid. I think you will find this to be the case under the Obama administration.
Before this gets too heated, I think it should be known that AMadrone is pulling your chain, playing devil’s advocate, and/or assuming the identity of one of the biggest hippies that Orrin went to lawschool with. That said, it does make the blog more interesting to have a little hippy dissent. Too bad said hippy is just a conservative disguised as a hippy, but it will do for now…until a real hippy comes to the table for discussion.
Dammit. Who let The Wife in here to spoil all the fun?
Tell me about it. And I’m not the biggest hippy – I’m the second biggest hippy Orrin went to law school with.
Well shit… At least my response was appreciated. Thanks for the love Derek!
The Wife goes where she pleases and doesn’t need anyone to let her in.
