So – Chuck Muth helped run Senator Elizabeth Halseth out of the Legislature by dragging her through the worst kind of tabloid mud on his various media outlets, and in doing so, made it orders of magnitude more difficult for the Republicans to take a majority in the state Senate. Oh, and then he brags about it. If this is conservative activism, then Harry Reid, Barack Obama, and the Democrats in the State Legislature must be some hard core conservatives.
I’m just trying to figure out why Muth has such a bug up his hooha about Halseth, such that the potential loss of control of the State Senate is worth it to him to slag her so relentlessly. It can’t be because he cares a whit about the personal morals (or lack thereof) in his politicians – he’s a huge Gingrich supporter, and Newt writes his wedding vows on dry erase boards.
No – it has to be something personal. What it is, who can say. Maybe he just hates women. Maybe she wouldn’t donate money to that “Mt. Reagan” scam of his (the banner ads for that now go to a 404 error page). Maybe he made a pass, and she rebuffed him – you have to be suspicious of any guy who is that creepily obsessed with any woman’s personal life. But no matter what it is, remember this – Chuck Muth is the kind of guy who gets his rocks off of publicly abusing a young woman (and her children) going through what is clearly an incredibly difficult divorce. That alone makes him a piece of trash of a human being (and I’m being generous with both terms).
But it’s worse than just that, because he’s willing to harm you and me and everyone else in the state for his own selfish reasons. Getting those rocks off is more important to him than whether or not taxes get raised, spending goes up, or regulations get more stifling. Either he’s too stupid to see these consequences, or he’s too selfish to care. Either way, it remains beyond my power to comprehend why any candidate, elected official, activist, or even just someone seeking information about Nevada Politics gives this guy the time of day.

Halseth was not the best legislator in Carson City, but she was far from the worst. She had a lot yet to learn, but her philosophical instincts were in the right place. She was always willing to listen to me when I had an issue to discuss, even if she didn’t agree with me on it. She had energy and a sense of humor, and she was willing to fight hard on legislative issues that were important to her.
And perhaps most importantly, she voted correctly (in a conservative’s view) on most issues.
But even if one believes she was irredeemably terrible as a legislator, numbers matter. With Halseth in office, Republicans only needed to flip a single seat to alter the entire balance of a body that is currently 11-10 in the Democrats’ favor. The party in the majority determines the agenda, the committee assignments, and the bills that are even allowed to be heard.
Her absence in an off-year in what is now a Democrat leaning district now makes it much more likely that we could be stuck with Debbie Smith chairing Finance instead of Greg Brower, Ruben Kihuen chairing Judiciary instead of Mike Roberson, or Mo Denis chairing Heath and Human Services instead of Ben Kiekhefer. (I generally like those Dem legislators I mentioned personally, but their politics are not my politics, and I think their policy ideas would be terrible for my family and our state.)
And if Muth’s 260-Part Series on Halseth isn’t responsible (at least in part) for her leaving (as I’m sure he will claim), why did he write it? No other blogger or journalist – left, right, or center – wallowed in that dirt. I guess Chuck likes to explore and speculate about the most intimate and tragic aspects of peoples’ personal lives just for giggles. No one with a shred of dignity or respect for their fellow human beings would do that to another person. No one worthy of ANY other person’s trust or respect (do you hear me, Republican candidates or party activists thinking of working with Chuck Muth?) acts in this manner.

I don’t care any more about Elizabeth Halseth’s personal life than I cared about Herman Cain’s, Ronald Reagan’s, or Bill Clinton’s for that matter. I do care about conservative policy.
Halseth’s resignation makes it less likely that conservative policy will get sent to Governor Sandoval’s desk. Muth’s unrelenting, brutal attacks on Halseth helped lead to her resignation. If the Democrats pick up her seat in November, and the Senate stays in Democratic hands as a result for the 2013 session, we will all have Chuck Muth to thank, at least in part.
Somewhere, one might even speculate that a check from a Mo Denis surrogate is being quietly deposited in a Citizen Outreach subsidiary account… Well, probably not – Judas at least had enough self respect to demand payment for his perfidy, and I’m not sure one can say the same of Muth. But if it were the case, it’s hard to figure what Chuck would have done any differently.

As for Elizabeth Halseth, I hope the best for her wherever she lands. She’s learned some painful and expensive lessons in the last few years – hopefully they lead to wisdom for the future. May she and her entire family – particularly her children – find peace.
Orrin– Your blog is usually a place to find thoughtful, relevant, and well written ideas and opinions about conservative politics. I often find your criticisms of our government and the systems that entangle our liberties to be empowering if not refreshing.
That being said, I think you may be off the mark on Muth. One, I’d give him no credit for Halseth’s resignation. She was going to feel the pressure one way or another.
Was he mean and callous about her personal life? Yes.
Was she living out of state with a trust fund golf pro whom she cheated on her husband with? Yes.
Does she have a history of making false accusations against men? Yes.
Are the constituents of SD 9 better off with the chance to elect someone who will actually represent them? Yes.
This sorry chapter in our Republican party’s history needs to come to a close. Her resignation was the right thing to do– anything else would have been pure politics and would have left her district without representation. Let’s work hard to elect the next Republican for SD 9 and leave Muth to trolling the Alaskan countryside trying to dig up more dirt on that woman. She should have never been elected.
“And perhaps most importantly, she voted correctly (in a conservative’s view) on most issues.”
I find it hard to believe in the travesty of conservative values demonstrated both politically and personally by Elizabeth Halseth that you find how she voted most important. For your sake, better hope those times you’ve spoken to her and found her energetic, full of humor and willing to listen that there were witnesses. Down the road she may characterize it as otherwise; let’s see what you write at that time.
The image you have chosen is a perfect illustration of X Sen. Halseth dragging her next unsuspecting victim into the swamp.
As you said,” No one with a shred of dignity or respect of their fellow human beings would do that to to another person”.
Larry, I don’t mean to let Halseth off the hook for her own behavior and choices. And perhaps you are correct that she never should have been elected. But Muth still bears plenty of blame for the situation. She would not have defeated Dennis Nolan (or perhaps even have run) without Muth’s strident backing in the first place, which is what makes his creepy and unrelenting attacks on her so much more disgusting.
Lots of people go through bad divorces and still do their jobs, and Halseth should have done the same. On the other hand, most people going through those divorces don’t have the same kind of gleefully cruel and public media attacks coming at them endlessly.
The silver lining is that Roberson has so far shown an ability to recruit strong candidates, so all may not be lost, and we may be better off in the end. But I stand by my general assertion that the Republican Party in Nevada will be better off the day that Chuck Muth’s influence on that party is no longer a factor in any way, and that this episode once again proves that beyond any reasonable doubt.
Maybe you should read your own article …” So just what is (or what should be) a “real” Conservative?”. I thought it was a well thought out piece, with the exception of using the reference of Jesus Christ as a politician. He was/is Way beyond politics.
So the Truth doesn’t matter only the republican agenda? Even if it means lying and protecting a liar who should resign in the disgrace that she created!
So it’s fine to partner with the Devil for “the republican cause”, instead of standing on the Truth, Ingrity and character, of which Elisabeth Halseth has NONE!
This guy blames Mr. Muth instead of placing the blame where it belongs. The real culprit who sold out the republican cause, with the purest form of hippocracy possible is Elisabeth Halseth, she and loser’s like this guy protecting her, is who shot the true and long term republican cause in the foot. This idiot is a trader and guys like him are why I see democract’s and republicans as just different sides of the same dysfunctional coin!
Thank God for Chuck Muth standing up for the Truth and having the courage to do so with so many selfish liars protecting a total hypocrit like X-Senator Halseth. Men like Chuck Muth speaking the Truth deserves and has earned the respect of Republican’s and Democract’s alike! We need more people like Mr Muth out there standing for the truth or we are all doomed!
Michael
[Michael, I have to ask – are you talking about the same Chuck Muth who has given his full-throated support to serial adulterer Newt Gingrich? –OJ]
Orrin — it’s funny, but this time I think you got it right. The attacks on Halseth were ridiculous in their scope; hateful messages that would send anyone running for the hills. What I find ironic is that nobody caught on that the information being passed on to Muth was from Halseth’s husband. Clearly, facts showed up in Muth’s blog that only the husband would know. That guy is creepy, and I have heard from more than one source that he has personally sent attacks at Elizabeth from many other directions, and that his compulsive behavior is beyond whacked out. Now, we are left to wonder whether or not we lost a great senator, or whether the people responsible for ousting her can sleep at night.
Jeremy- shame and guilt of the truth being known have a funny way of motivating people to run for the hills. I guess you’d prefer the delusion of lies and liars standing their ground? May be that’s where your expert opinion comes from! You’d make a great democrat and fit in perfectly with those republicans ruining the republican party like X-Sen. Halseth and all her protector’s.
OJ – So let me get this straight…you support and protect X-Sen. Halseth, but have a problem with Newt Gingrich? May be you find yourself defending X-Sen Halseth because you have a personal problem with Mr Muth? Ouch! You blew it and have betrayed YOUR true motives! I’m sorry for you doing that to yourself, I really am!
I have problems with Gingrich, but none of them have anything to do with Newt’s personal life. And my problems with Muth revolve around his persistent habit of doing wanton damage to the Republican Party, and the Conservative Movement along with it.
My country is in extremis. I have no patience for tabloid crap that doesn’t ultimately impact my life getting in the way of conservative legislative majorities which WILL impact my life. I really don’t understand why this is hard to understand.
I think it may be more a sense of feeling let down or betrayed that is part of Muth’s Halseth articles. I remember back before she was elected I had emailed her some simple website questions and didn’t receive any response. Then one day an email appeared with the note that Muth had said I was “okay.” So I knew she was consulting, either officially or unofficially, with him back then. So I would guess seeing her go completely off the rails had to be a disappoint to him.
But, most importantly, Halseth was elected based solely on her “family values” appeal. It most definitely wasn’t experience or, if you saw her performance on Ralston’s F2F, ideas of any sort. Plus, the Yerushlami “party couple” mailer she did should make her a target. Glass houses and what not.
If there is a bigger at fault in this it is the NV State GOP’s failure to vet Halseth before the race. One quick Google search back in ’09 turned up her history of litigation (that was the question I asked that resulted in her blocking me on Twitter). That, and her lack of experience (or NV longevity), should have raised a huge red flag. But it didn’t and now the party will more than likely pay the price with yet another missed opportunity.
OJ…Do you actually “read” what you write? I can’t help but say, that your responses are like driving away from the crime scene of your article in a “White Bronco”!
You have no issues with Newts personal life but refer to him as a “serial adulterer” in order to achieve a “tabloid” type attack on Mr Muth!
Just like with X-Sen Halseth, the Republican Party doesn’t need any help with doing “wonton damage” to itself, as they unfortunately are doing a great job all by themselves!
Lastly you are so obsessed with achieving a “conservative legislative majority” that you will make a deal with the Devil, protect and defend a lying X-Sen Halseth believing “the end justify’s the means” which is the doctrine of those you oppose, Not Conservatives! Unfortunately, it’s true…You Don’t Understand!
