Principles, Presumptions, and Bailouts

November 20th, 2008 · 14 Comments

So how is it that the Left simultaneously believes the US Government is the root of All Bad Things (or at least in on the conspiracy), but wants them in charge of our auto industry, banks, and health care?  I think it boils down to a (wholly unearned) presumption of competence. Liberals think government is […]

“At Least it Can’t Get Worse…”

November 11th, 2008 · 11 Comments

I was looking at some old comment threats from the Federalist Society Blog I contributed to frequently in law school.  One of the comments from an avowed libertarian caught my eye.  He said: [P]utting the Democrats in charge of one or both houses of congress can’t possibly make matters worse, with Bush in the presidency. […]

Liveblogging the Final Debate

October 15th, 2008 · 24 Comments

And that’s it. If McCain pulls this out, he’ll have Joe the Plumber to thank. I think this was by far the best debate, both in format, in McCain’s performance, and in moderator performace. I’m fired back up, but still unsure if a victory is possible at this point. The next few weeks will decide.

“Americans can only hope that those in charge know what they’re doing.”

October 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

That’s how the Reno Gazette Journal summed up the bailout package this Sunday in their lead editorial.  The funny (not ha-ha) thing is that it was how they summed up a positive editorial on the situation. The only thing worse than the summation was the headline:

Where’s the Porkbarrel Warrior?

October 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

What a disgrace that John McCain voted for the Senate’s bailout version yesterday.  The core – the heart and soul – of his domestic economic policy is to oppose wasteful spending, and to give no quarter to those who sneak in absurd and unrelated spending measures that give millions to their constituents and allow the […]

What Happened

October 1st, 2008 · Comments Off on What Happened

From Reason Magazine, an excellent and detailed explanation of how the financial sector got into this mess.  I couldn’t agree with the summation more: Congressional leaders have vowed to bring a new proposal for a vote, possibly as soon as Thursday, proving yet again that Washington is fertile ground for really bad ideas. But with […]

Thank You For Your Absence…

September 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment

So.  On the day after Congress fails to pass a bailout plan and then goes on vacation, the Dow regains nearly 2/3rds of the previous day’s loses…  Think what we can accomplish if they stay on vacation!

What Does Deregulation Have To Do With Anything?

September 30th, 2008 · Comments Off on What Does Deregulation Have To Do With Anything?

Barack Obama constantly talks about how George Bush’s “gutting” of Wall Street regulations (with john McCain’s help) is what is responsible for the current financial mess.  I dare him (or anyone else) to name one such gutted regulation that would have helped prevent the current problem in the slightest.  Just one!!!  Why doesn’t he?  Because […]

Socialism Staved Off For Another Day

September 30th, 2008 · Comments Off on Socialism Staved Off For Another Day

Our message to Wall Street is this: the party is over. The era of golden parachutes for high-flying Wall Street operators is over. No longer will the U.S. taxpayer bailout the recklessness of Wall Street. Said Nancy Pelosi, right before she voted to force the U.S. taxpayer to bailout the recklessness of Wall Street.  Fortunately, […]

Treat First, Diagnose Later

September 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Obama told the “CBS Evening News” he was not sure what went wrong. Well, that should help him solve this problem and bring Democrats and Republicans together.  If you don’t know “what went wrong,” how do you expect to make it right?!?

Economic Principles and Bailouts

September 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Imagine if you inherited a business that couldn’t fail. Not just that you had a solid business model, but that you were backed by an inexhaustible trust fund which guaranteed you would never to go out of business.  No matter what you did, no matter who you hired, no matter how poorly you managed your […]
